This made them highly sought-after among collectors, as each one felt like a special surprise arriving right at your doorstep.
Beyond their rarity (I’m thinking especially Rapunzel!), Mail Order Ponies also added a fun and interactive aspect to collecting. Kids would carefully save up proofs of purchase, fill out order forms, and patiently wait for their pony to arrive—a process that only heightened the anticipation. Today, these ponies remain some of the most cherished and collectible figures in the My Little Pony universe, with their limited availability making them highly desirable among fans.

Mail Order Exclusive Ponies - Year 2
The first Mail Order Pony was released during Hasbro’s Year 2 lineup. It was called Ember, and it was a baby pony that came in three colors: Pink, light blue, and lavender. The three variants are equally easy to find today, although lavender has a slightly bigger presence in second-hand markets. Their price is about $10 each.

Mail Order Exclusive Ponies - Year 4
During Year 4 of My Little Pony, there were three Mail Exclusives. These were Stocking, Hollywood, and Baby Lucky. Stocking was a white Earth pony with fuchsia hair and a cutie mark of a colorful stocking. Hollywood, on the other hand, was a Flutter Pony in an intense fuchsia color (quite different from her pastel counterparts). And Baby Lucky was a brother pony with a blue body and blue hair.

Year 5 only had one Mail Order pony you could get, called Baby Blue Ribbon. This baby came with a game board, paper dice, and a blue ribbon, as the name hints. It was designed in the Baby Ember Pose and had a blue body, blue hair, and purple eyes.

Mail Order Exclusive Ponies - Year 6
Year 6 was an important one for Hasbro’s Mail-Order collection. This year, we saw not just a couple but EIGHT ponies you could get through stamps. They were a combination of little brothers, Sparkle Pony, and even a new pony friend called Baby Hoppy (a kangaroo). As with many other mail-order ponies, all of these can be a little difficult to find, but they are some of my personal favorite designs.

For Year 7, Hasbro released, again, several unique ponies. The Mail Order ones for this period included Big Brothers, Baby Pearlized Ponies, Pretty Mane Ponies, and Baby Sisters. I particularly like the pearlized ponies, although I wish they hadn’t covered the eyes. Some of these look like they would have trouble seeing! Still, these babies are highly collectible and make for a great display.

Restoring My Little Pony is the result of almost three years of restoring and customizing My Little Pony toys for my channel RetroGeek Crafts. The book contains 86 pages full of detailed step-by-step guides, project features, material and technique comparisons, and much more. The book is mostly focused on My Little Pony Generation 1 (MLP G1). However, these techniques can be applied to all other generations, including MLP G2, G3, G4, and even G5.
This unofficial MLP guide to the first generation of My Little Pony (known as G1) was created by Summer Hayes. The book provides everything a collector needs to identify G1 ponies and their accessories, and understand their value. The guide contains large, full color photos of every pony, playset and accessory released in the US (and in some cases in other countries) in the 1980s and 1990s.
