Description
The Art of The Hobbit by J.R.R. Tolkien presents Tolkien’s complete artwork for The Hobbit, released in honor of the book’s 75th anniversary. When Tolkien originally wrote The Hobbit, he was already a skilled amateur artist and created illustrations to accompany the manuscript. The first edition included ten black-and-white illustrations, two maps, and designs for the binding and dust jacket, all crafted by Tolkien himself. Later, he added five color paintings, some of his finest work, which have helped shape readers’ visions of Bilbo Baggins and Middle-earth.
Authored and edited by renowned Tolkien experts Wayne G. Hammond and Christina Scull, this collection showcases all of Tolkien’s art created for The Hobbit, including over 100 sketches, drawings, paintings, maps, and plans. Some pieces appear here for the first time, and others are published in color for the first time, offering readers a vivid and complete look at Tolkien’s visual interpretation of his beloved story.
