Care Bears Vintage Toys & Merch

The Care Bears were created in 1981 as characters for greeting cards. Each bear represented a different emotion or sentiment, such as love, friendship, or caring, which was perfect for a children’s product. After the greeting cards became popular, American Greetings licensed the characters to Kenner Products, who made the first plush Care Bears in 1983.

The toy line was soon supported by animated television specials starting in 1983, produced by DIC Enterprises. These specials helped cement the Care Bears’ popularity by giving them stories, personalities, and a shared home in the Kingdom of Caring. The success of the TV specials led to feature-length movies, the first of which, The Care Bears Movie, came out in 1985.

The Care Bears made their debut in 1981 as adorable characters on greeting cards created by the American Greetings company. Their popularity quickly soared, and by 1983, they’d become cuddly toys, each with their own unique color and personality symbol on their tummies. The lovable bears soon expanded beyond toys, starring in their own animated TV series in 1985 and then hitting the big screen in The Care Bears Movie the same year. These characters quickly became 80s icons, spreading messages of kindness, friendship, and caring that still resonate today.

The Care Bears weren’t just cute toys; they were designed to teach children about emotions, empathy, and caring for others. So, it’s no surprise they made a powerful comeback in 2002 with several new designs and characters that continue to do well today.

(And How To Identify Them!)

The 80’s Care Bears franchise had several toy collections, including poseable characters, miniatures, plush bears, and playsets. If you are unfamiliar with the line, the differences can seem quite subtle at first, but there once you get used to the groups, it’s really easy to tell when a vintage Care Bear was made and what group it belongs to. Let’s take a look at a few examples.

1. The 1980s Poseable Care Bears

There were ten characters in the original Poseable Care Bears series (then, five more were added). You can see some of the most popular ones below, but please click on the button to see the complete collection of vintage Poseable Care Bear figures. The easiest way to identify these: They are articulated! And they have (or least had, at some point!) a little lock of hair.

The caring leader of the Care Bears, Tenderheart spreads love and kindness with his heart belly badge.

The ultimate encourager, Cheer Bear’s rainbow belly badge spreads joy and positivity everywhere.

Known for her sweet nature, Love-A-Lot Bear shares her love with everyone through her two-heart belly badge.

A gentle, sleepy bear, Bedtime Bear’s crescent moon badge brings sweet dreams to all.

Always cheerful, Funshine Bear lights up the room with his sunny personality and bright sun belly badge.

The friendliest bear around, Friend Bear’s two flower badge shows she’s always there to lend a paw.

2. The 1980s Plush Care Bears

The original Care Bears plush collection from the 1980s came in three primary sizes: 6 inches, 13 inches, and 18 inches, appealing to a wide range of fans who wanted to bring a piece of Care-a-Lot into their lives. These sizes offered something for every collector, from small, portable companions to larger, cuddle-friendly bears. Additionally, select Care Bears were produced in a striking 36-inch size, making them standout statement pieces and favorites among devoted fans and collectors.

Spreads love with her two-heart badge, encouraging others to care deeply.

The clever cousin, Bright Heart Raccoon is known for his bright ideas and curious nature.

Sleepy and calm, with a moon and star badge for sweet dreams, is part of the 6″ plush collection.

Dreamy and imaginative, with a shooting star badge to inspire big dreams.

A courageous leader with a lion’s heart, Brave Heart inspires bravery in everyone.

3. The 1980s Miniature Care Bears

The miniature 80s Care Bears were made of PVC (or harder plastic) and were just about an inch high. Each character was available in several different poses and showcased different molded accessories. For example, Cheer Bear came with a loudspeaker, a bucket of paint and paintbrush, a rainbow, or an artist’s palette. The lineup of Care Bear Cousins, on the other hand, only had one pose each.

4. The Care Bears Vintage Playsets

Kenner and American Greetings produced three Care Bear Playsets: Care-a-Lot, Cloud Mobile and Rainbow Roller. The Care-a-Lot playset was released in 1983 for ages 4+ and included a carry-along heart case, 3 cloud chairs, and a heart table. The Cloud Mobile playset was released in 1983. It had decals on the doors, a heart on the hood and wheels that rolled smoothly. Finally, the Rainbow Roller playset, made in 1984, had a very cool effect: The rainbow wheel spun when the car was pushed, while the wheels made a clicking noise.

The heart of the Care Bears’ world, Care-a-Lot is a magical place full of love, rainbows, and cloud-filled adventures where all the bears live and play.

The Care Bears’ classic cloud-shaped car, the Cloud Mobile zips across the sky to spread caring and reach those in need.

This vibrant, rainbow-colored scooter lets the Care Bears travel around Care-a-Lot in style, bringing joy and excitement to every ride.
