Glo Worm was a stuffed toy designed by Hasbro’s Playskool and first introduced in 1982. The body contained a battery-powered device that lit up the toy’s vinyl head when squeezed. This created a soft, comforting glow. The original toy was so successful on release that Hasbro soon created a series of storybooks, night lights, videos, and other merchandise. In 1986, Playskool released a number of toys that also glowed but were made of soft vinyl. They are known as “The Glo Friends”. Their names were: Glo Snugbug, Glo Snail, Glo Doodlebug, Glo Bug, Glo Grannybug, Glo Clutterbug, Glo Bashfulbug, Glo Butterfly, Glo Bopbug, Glo Cricket, Glo Skunkbug, Glo Bookbug, Glo worm, and Glo Nikkibug. Glo Worm continued to be popular into the early 1990s. Explore Glo Worm gift ideas, products, and merch section.

Vintage 1980s Glo Worm Plush Toys: What Are They And Why Did Kids Love Them So Much?
Glo Worm was first released as a soft, cuddly toy whose head lit up when squeezed. Hasbro and Playskool later released many other Glo Worm products – Some, as we will see below, under the line “Glo Friends“.
Here’s how it worked: Inside the plush body was a miniature flashlight-style incandescent bulb (not an LED). The bulb sat directly behind the translucent vinyl face. Most models used 2 AA batteries, squeezing the plush body pressed a simple mechanical switch, and the switch completed the circuit and powered the bulb. Because it was an incandescent bulb, the face glowed with a soft, warm yellow light. The bulb also generated a little heat, making the toy feel cozy—part of its appeal as a bedtime toy.

The first ever Glo Worm plush was manufactured in Pawtucket, Rhode Island 🔗. The brand behind the successful toy was Hasbro, and the worm was designed by the Playskool division.
So, what animal is the Glo Worm supposed to represent? The agreement seems to be: A larva. Yep, you read that right. A larva in pajamas. Of course, glow worms are also an inspiration for this toy’s design, but they are not the cuddly green soft toy you might imagine. Glow worms are, in fact, beetles. They do have bioluminescent bodies, so Hasbro got that right. The purpose of the light? To attract mates. So, yeah, not the same thing!
The mechanism behind the Glo Worm‘s success was quite straightforward: The worm body had a battery-powered device (did you open your Glo Worm? I did mine, of course, and broke it!). When you squeezed this device, the toy would light up the vinyl head, which had a lamp inside. The resulting glow was warm and comforting, the reason why so many kids have incredible memories of this lovely vintage toy. Today, most of the original battery containers (in the vintage Glo Worm toys) are no longer functional. So, many collectors remove the whole thing or replace it with a newer system that uses LEDs and rechargeable batteries instead.
The Glo Worm Friends, often simply known as Glo Friends, are a charming and whimsical group of glowing characters introduced by Hasbro in the 1980s as a spin-off of the popular Glo Worm toy line. Designed to be comforting companions for children, each Glo Friend features a soft, glow-in-the-dark body and a unique personality that captures the imagination, making them beloved bedtime buddies.
