All About the My Little Pony Vintage Flutter Ponies

The Flutter Ponies were a unique sub-line of My Little Pony toys introduced in Year 4 (1986) by Hasbro as part of the G1 collection.
All About the My Little Pony Year 4 Flutter Ponies

The Flutter Ponies, introduced in My Little Pony Year 4 (1986), were designed to stand out from the other pony types with their delicate appearance, smaller stature, and their signature fluttering wings, made from thin, translucent plastic.

Flutter Ponies were slender and slightly taller than the standard Earth Ponies, with a more refined look. Their most distinctive feature was their beautiful, removable plastic wings. These wings had a soft, fluttering effect when moved. However, the wings were fragile and prone to breaking, which makes intact original wings rare and valuable for collectors.

Each Flutter Pony came with a flutter comb or brush in a coordinating color, a flower-shaped stand that allowed the pony to “hover” when displayed, and replacement wings (in some sets) to account for their fragility.

The Complete List of G1 Flutter Ponies

The Flutter Ponies were first released as part of the My Little Pony Year 4 lineup and also appeared in the animated My Little Pony: The Movie (1986) and in episodes of the My Little Pony ‘n Friends TV series. In the movie, they were shown as magical beings who could use their “Utter Flutter” power to create strong gusts of wind with their wings.

Where to Find Replacement Flutter Pony Wings

If you have a Flutter Pony, chances are you DO NOT have the wings. Very few listings still include them, and those that do can reach astronomical prices. And finding original wings is a challenge in itself, too. So, the best option if you need to replace wings is to get a new pair. Luckily, some collectors have turned to creating them!

I personally recommend Etsy’s MasqueradesBoutique shop 🔗. These are the wings I use, and I love them because they come in many colors, including neon green, copper, blue, gold, and more.

My Little Pony G1 Essentials

If you want to learn more about ponies and how to restore them, here are two resources that can help. The first is the unofficial MLP G1 guide (which has photos, prices, etc). The second is my own book, Restoring My Little Pony!

Restoring My Little Pony is the result of almost three years of restoring and customizing My Little Pony toys for my channel RetroGeek Crafts. The book contains 86 pages full of detailed step-by-step guides, project features, material and technique comparisons, and much more. The book is mostly focused on My Little Pony Generation 1 (MLP G1). However, these techniques can be applied to all other generations, including MLP G2, G3, G4, and even G5.

This unofficial MLP guide to the first generation of My Little Pony (known as G1) was created by Summer Hayes. The book provides everything a collector needs to identify G1 ponies and their accessories, and understand their value. The guide contains large, full color photos of every pony, playset and accessory released in the US (and in some cases in other countries) in the 1980s and 1990s.
