Top Translucent Toys of the 80s: The Sparkle My Little Ponies

The Sparkle Ponies from Hasbro's My Little Pony line are a dazzling group introduced in Year 6. Learn more about these translucent toys.
Top Translucent Toys of the 80s: The Sparkle My Little Ponies

The Sparkle Ponies were one of the most magical and eye-catching additions to the G1 My Little Pony line, first introduced in Year 6 (1987-1988). What made them stand out was their translucent, glitter-filled bodies, which gave them a dazzling, almost otherworldly appearance. Unlike traditional ponies, whose bodies were solid pastel colors, Sparkle Ponies shimmered under the light, making them look like they had been sprinkled with fairy dust. To add even more sparkle, their manes and tails were streaked with tinsel, something that was relatively new to the My Little Pony lineup at the time. This combination of transparent, glittery plastic and shimmering hair gave the Sparkle Ponies an almost ethereal, magical quality that set them apart from their non-sparkly counterparts.

The themes of the Sparkle Ponies often revolved around space, dreams, and celestial elements, with symbols featuring stars, rockets, or dreamy motifs that added to their mystical aesthetic.

About Hasbro's Sparkling My Little Ponies

Each pony had its own unique color combination, with some sporting vibrant neon hues while others leaned into soft, pastel tones. Originally, these ponies were released as mail-order exclusives, which meant kids had to send in proofs of purchase and wait patiently for their new glittery friend to arrive in the mail.

However, due to their popularity, they were later available in stores during Year 7 (1988-1989), giving more fans a chance to collect them. Over time, their shimmering bodies and celestial designs have made them one of the most beloved and sought-after pony sets in G1.

My Little Pony G1 Essentials

If you want to learn more about ponies and how to restore them, here are two resources that can help. The first is the unofficial MLP G1 guide (which has photos, prices, etc). The second is my own book, Restoring My Little Pony!

Restoring My Little Pony is the result of almost three years of restoring and customizing My Little Pony toys for my channel RetroGeek Crafts. The book contains 86 pages full of detailed step-by-step guides, project features, material and technique comparisons, and much more. The book is mostly focused on My Little Pony Generation 1 (MLP G1). However, these techniques can be applied to all other generations, including MLP G2, G3, G4, and even G5.

This unofficial MLP guide to the first generation of My Little Pony (known as G1) was created by Summer Hayes. The book provides everything a collector needs to identify G1 ponies and their accessories, and understand their value. The guide contains large, full color photos of every pony, playset and accessory released in the US (and in some cases in other countries) in the 1980s and 1990s.
