The Fantastic Fashions clothes line was one of the most distinctive parts of Mattel’s vintage Princess of Power toy range. While most action figure lines of the 1980s focused on weapons and vehicles, She-Ra’s world combined fantasy adventure with fashion play. The result? A series of outfit packs designed specifically for the 5.5-inch Princess of Power dolls!
Mattel produced two major waves of Fantastic Fashions. The first wave debuted alongside the early Princess of Power toys in 1984–1985 and contained eight outfits. A later assortment introduced additional fashions with names such as Blue Lightning, Heart of Gold, Secret Messenger, Reflections in Red, and Windy Jumper.
Fantastic Fashions from 1985
Unlike ordinary doll clothing, these outfits usually included a hidden gimmick or fantasy feature. Mattel marketed them as glamorous fashions that also concealed tools, armor, shields, maps, swords, or other adventure accessories.
This reflected the overall Princess of Power concept: the characters were fashionable princesses, but they were also heroes engaged in battles against the Evil Horde.
