If you enjoyed collecting stickers in the 80s and 90s, you probably remember those fuzzy little squares from Sandylion. These stickers, which had a velvety surface we hadn’t seen before, came in enormous continuous rolls. You would visit a shop and pull out the length you wanted, all in near 2″ x 2″ squares, which collectors today call “modules” or “mods.”
Sandylion, a Canadian company founded in the 1980s, was the first to make these fuzzy stickers available for the international market, alongside other incredible innovations such as pearlized stickers and prismatic stickers. On this page, you will find my little digital collection of Sandylion fuzzy stickers, both in 2×2 modules and maxi 4×6.5 sheets.
The Most Popular Vintage Fuzzy Stickers
I’ve been working on these entries for a while. I wanted to make sure the stickers were easy to identify and compare, so I scavenged and manually cleaned public listing images and gave them all a uniform cream-colored background. Here is what I have so far, although I’m sure there are many more fuzzy stickers I haven’t yet found! At the time of writing this, hundreds of images are processed, but the question is how to display so many entries! So, think of the following ones as examples of each theme and technique used by Sandylion stickers in the 1980s and 90s.
Animal Fuzzy Stickers
Animals had been, for some time, a very popular choice for stickers and stationery of all kinds. When this new fuzzy coating made it to the market, Sandylion’s new sticker range exploded into a rainbow of colors, clever shapes, and patterns. Below are some favorite designs for 2×2 mods, including pink flamingos, fuchsia cats, and soft sheep. I’ve grouped the animals by… type? sort of…
Horses of the “natural” and magical kind were also popular designs for fuzzy stickers. Unicorns, in fact, had become a favorite choice for kids in the 80s and 90s. Come to think of it, we still love them just as much! So, these are horses… and one cow sticker sheet, because I need six per row ;)
There are so many animals! But one is particularly coveted: Cats! Sandylion produced lots of sticker mods based on cats, kittens, and felines like tigers, leopards, and panthers. For example, here are some cat and big car vintage stickers that might ring a bell:
Dogs were also a popular choice for stickers. The fuzzy effect made them very coveted, and who doesn’t love dogs? The good thing about this line is that Sandylion tried to make stickers for the most popular dog breeds, including Dachsunds, Dalmatians, and Cocker Spaniels.
There are so many animals! A little break to show you some actual second-hand stickers you can get right now if you so wish. And then, below, more animals and… everything else!
And now back to the remaining animals, starting with some rabbits. Rabbits were a natural choice for fuzzy stickers, so it’s not surprising there are quite a few designs. Turtles and frogs were also very popular fuzzy sticker options. Here are some examples of classic vintage stickers featuring animals that like to live in or around water
Sandylion also loved creating bear stickers in different configurations and designs. Many were linked to the holidays.
Wow! There are so many of them! A little break to catch some air and… we continue! Let’s look at fish. Anything related to water, really, that hasn’t made it to the previous groupings.
Non-Animal Fuzzy Stickers
Sandylion also offered many other stickers with themes sorrounding celebrations, love, fruits, and flowers. Some of these stickers have maintained their value while a few special editions are very sought-after by vintage sticker collectors.
Winter & Xmas Fuzzy Stickers
The holidays were the perfect opportunity for Sandylion to create new fuzzy stickers to celebrate the winter.
Sandylion Sticker Sizes: Mod vd Maxi
Fuzzy Sandylion stickers featured a layer of fuzz or flocking, making them an attractive option for sticker collectors. I remember spending ages touching these stickers, feeling the soft velvety surface! They came in two sizes: mod (2 by 2 inches) and maxi (4 by 6.5 inches). You can see a rough comparison below.
MODS
Mod sticker sheets measure 2 x 2 inches. They are the smallest size available.
MAXIS
Maxi sticker sheets measure 2 x 2 inches. They are not as common as the mods.
Other Types of Vintage Stickers
When it came to collecting Sandylion sticker sheets, the texture and finish were everything. Collectors specifically hunted for three top tiers, which I will try my best to explain. At the bottom of the pyramid (easier to produce but still holding a very respectable quality) you had Kromekote stickers with no effects; just glossy paint. But there were three other types of vintage stickers we all loved: Fuzzy (with flocking or a velvety surface), Pearly (a holographic or iridiscent finish), and Prismatic (which looked like little crystals). You can learn more about them below or in the main Sandylion Stickers page.
Pearly Stickers (Iridiscent/Opal)
These had a gorgeous, milky, iridescent sheen that shifted in the light. They didn’t have the harsh glare of foil; instead, they looked like polished seashells. The pearly unicorns, ballet slippers, sailboats, and hearts were highly coveted. See all >
Prismatic Stickers (Sparkly/Crystals)
These were the shiny, holographic ones that cracked the light into rainbows, often used for laser-style designs, frogs, and shooting stars. The effect became popular later, but Sandylion were the first to do it right! See all >
Kromekote Stickers (Plain)
These were Sandylion’s standard glossy paper stickers. They were still cute, but definitely the “base layer” of a trading session compared to a rare fuzzy mod. Even though these stickers had no flashy effects, they are still highly collectible and beloved for their detail. See all >
More Sandylion Stickers
Fuzzy stickers had a layer of fuzz or flocking that made them quite a new and attractive option for sticker collectors. Pearly stickers had a layer of iridescence that produced all sorts of effects when held to the light. And Kromekote stickers were matte or glossy paper stickers. Here are some examples in case you’re not sure which is which:
Kromekote Teddy Bears
Pearly Skiing Dinos
Four colorful dinosaurs skiing down a hill. RARITY: Uncommon.
Prism Five Frogs
Five spotted and very colorful frogs. RARITY: Uncommon.
