If you like vintage My Little Ponies, you have probably come across these aquatic variants. My Little Pony Sea Ponies are among some of the favorites of MLP G1 collectors worldwide. So, what were they, exactly, and did Hasbro think it was a good idea to introduce them?
Sea ponies were designed to be bath toys. In fact, some of them had weights in their tails in order to help them float at the surface of the water. The Sea Ponies introduced a new subcategory of My Little Pony toys, as these little guys looked and felt different from their land-dwelling counterparts! For one, they had fins instead of hooves and colorful sea-themed accessories like floaters, seashells (with suction cups that stuck to the sides of the bathtub), and ocean-themed combs.
That’s right! These sea pony toys were designed to be submerged in water, where they could float (they had a little hole next to one ear so you could pop the water out when you were done playing). Many Sea Ponies also came with special features such as color-changing abilities, squirt action, or musical elements.
Year Two Sea Ponies (1983-1984)
My Little Pony Year Two included adult Sea Ponies of three types: Seawinkle, Wavedancer, and Sealight. These original sea ponies came with clam shells (pink, lilac, and green, respectively), a pair of combs, and a ribbon. Together, these original sea ponies represented the magic of friendship and the beauty of the ocean in the My Little Pony universe. They are generally considered “adult” ponies, as they are larger than sea ponies that came in the following year releases.

Restoring My Little Pony is the result of almost three years of restoring and customizing My Little Pony toys for my channel RetroGeek Crafts. The book contains 86 pages full of detailed step-by-step guides, project features, material and technique comparisons, and much more. The book is mostly focused on My Little Pony Generation 1 (MLP G1). However, these techniques can be applied to all other generations, including MLP G2, G3, G4, and even G5.
This unofficial MLP guide to the first generation of My Little Pony (known as G1) was created by Summer Hayes. The book provides everything a collector needs to identify G1 ponies and their accessories, and understand their value. The guide contains large, full color photos of every pony, playset and accessory released in the US (and in some cases in other countries) in the 1980s and 1990s.
