Description

Sculpted by Edward Clark Potter from Fine cold cast resin Bronz finished, the lions have guarded the entrance to one of the world’s great collections of books and manuscripts since 1911. Their nicknames have changed over the decades. First they were called Leo Astor and Leo Lenox, after library founders John Jacob Astor and James Lenox. Later, they were known as Lord Astor and Lady Lenox. During the 1930s, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia named them Patience and Fortitude, for the qualities he felt New Yorkers would need to survive the economic depression. The Lion Bookends are beautifully detailed reproductions of the monumental originals, a favorite gift among New Yorkers and library lovers everywhere for the memories they evoke of both the Library and New York City.
