The MLP Princess Ponies, released for the first time between 1986 and 1987, had some unique features that make them highly collectible today, including inlaid jewels and metallic tinsel hair. The Princesses were released in two main groups, during Year Five and Year Six of Hasbro’s G1 lineup.
The Year Five Princess Ponies, released for the first time in 1986-87, are some of the most popular ponies among MLP G1 collectors. They featured metallic symbols and unique inlaid plastic jewels, had tinsel in their hair, and came with damsel hats, a pick comb, and a wand. Subsequent years saw new variations of these ponies.
The Year Six Princess Ponies from 1987-88 were very similar to those from Year Five, with raised medallion symbols with plastic jewels and colored metallic tinsel in their manes and tails. Each Year Six Princess Pony also had a long metallic tinsel forelock, held by a crown-shaped hair clip. They came with crown-shaped barrettes and had no companions.
My Little Pony Year 5
Year 5’s Princess Ponies (Princess Royal Blue, Princess Sparkle, Princess Serena, Princess Starburst, Princess Tiffany, and Princess Amber) each had their own unique magical wands and special powers.
My Little Pony Year 6
Year 6’s Princess Ponies continued the royal legacy with a lineup of six new characters: Princess Moondust, Princess Pristina, Princess Misty, Princess Sunbeam, Princess Dawn, and Princess Taffeta, each with symbols representing their unique personalities and talents.
Later, Hasbro re-released some of these princesses, mostly in the UK, with variations in hair color, tinsel, body components, or symbol shape. You can learn more about these variants in my book: The Unofficial My Little Pony Companion.
My Little Pony Year 6
This family was the fourth set of Princess Ponies and, although they shared the pose with the Princess Brush ‘n Grow Ponies, they had long and thick “real” eyelashes. These ponies had no name, so they are referred to by their color. Their accessories were a silver crown, an iridescent cape with pink fur, and a frog brush, and their packaging had a curved front bubble.
