The Merry Go Round Ponies are one of the most unique-looking groups from the G1 My Little Pony line. These ponies debuted in Year 7 (1988-1989) and, instead of painted symbols, they featured molded saddles with flowers, tassels, hearts, and more. These beautifully sculpted details made them look like carousel horses!
These ponies were released in three unique poses, each slightly modified from earlier My Little Pony designs—similar to how the Sundae Best Ponies and Princess Ponies received updated poses in Year 6. Each Merry Go Round Pony had her own distinct color combination, pose, and personality.
My Little Pony Year 6
All Merry Go Round ponies were Earth ponies. There are only six of them in the entire My Little Pony Generation One line, all released during Year Seven.
The Merry Go Round Ponies made their media debut at the end of a long multi-part comic story called “Twirler and the Whispering Whirligig”. These ponies had been stuck inside a Whirligig (a toy or ornamental device that spins or whirls, powered by wind, hand, or motor), but luckily had the help of Twirler and her friends, who set them free.
The Merry Go Round Pony combs were specially designed flower-shaped brushes that came with each of the six Merry Go Round Ponies. Each brush matched the pony’s color scheme and added to their whimsical carousel theme. These combs were shaped like a simple, rounded five-petal flower, making them distinct from other MLP brushes of the time.
