The Vintage My Little Pony Year Two (which covered 1983–1984) introduced new pony lines and characters, and a few interesting features. For example, we saw new poses or designs, plus colors and unique pony traits that became iconic in the My Little Pony series.
The year started with a re-release of the Collector Pose ponies from Year One, but with a new feature: Concave feet instead of flat feet. There were also new themes: Earth Ponies with floral and fruit-inspired symbols, Pegasus Ponies known for their adventurous spirit, and Unicorn Ponies featuring celestial and magical designs.
One of the standout innovations of Year Two was the introduction of Sea Ponies. These seahorse-like ponies came with shell-shaped floats, which meant you could take them into your bath! A few baby Ponies also made their debut during this period, offering adorable miniature versions of the characters.
So, let’s take a look at the different ponies produced by Hasbro during 1983 and 1984!
The second set of Earth Ponies included some pretty classic ponies like the beloved Applejack, Bow Tie (my personal favorite), and Blossom. These ponies were notable for their unique color schemes and distinct symbols, ranging from flowers to fruit themes. Like I mentioned above, we still have the six original Collector Ponies, but also a few new characters, which are the ones listed below.
Bubbles is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a yellow body, blue mane and tail, blue eyes, and a symbol of light blue and light green bubbles.
Seashell is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She has a lavender body, mint green mane and tail, green eyes, and her symbol features green seashells.
Applejack is a green Earth Pony with an orange mane and tail, and she is known for her hardworking, honest, and down-to-earth personality.
Bow Tie is a Generation 1 (G1) My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a blue body with straight pink hair and purple eyes. Her symbol consists of six pink bows adorning her flank.
This set introduced popular characters like Firefly and Medley. These Pegasus ponies were defined by their ability to “fly” and were often depicted with adventurous or whimsical personalities. The G1 Rainbow Ponies were released in two sets, one during Year 2 and another in Year 3. In the United States, these ponies had distinctive rainbow-striped manes and tails, as well as gorgeous glittery symbols.
Medley is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She has a turquoise body, dark green mane and tail, blue eyes, and a symbol of dark green glittery music notes.
Firefly is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a pink body, purplish-blue mane and tail, purple eyes, and a symbol of two purplish-blue lightning bolts.
Parasol is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Rainbow Ponies collection. She features a pink body adorned with a symbol of glittery purple umbrellas.
Moonstone is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Rainbow Ponies collection. She features a pale blue body adorned with a glittery blue planet and silver stars as her symbol.
Skydancer is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Year Two Rainbow Ponies set. She is a yellow pegasus pony featuring a vibrant rainbow-colored mane.
Sunlight is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Rainbow Ponies collection. She features an aqua-colored body with a mane and tail striped in vibrant rainbow hues.
Windy is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Year Two Rainbow Ponies set. She is a white unicorn adorned with a glittery purple symbol depicting swirling wind patterns.
Starshine is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the Year Two Rainbow Ponies set. She is a white pegasus pony featuring a vibrant rainbow-colored mane and tail.
Notable unicorns like Moondancer, Twilight, and Glory debuted during this year. These ponies typically featured celestial or magical-themed symbols, emphasizing their mystical charm.
Sunbeam is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a pale blue body, a mane and tail of white with a yellow streak, blue eyes, and a symbol of a golden sun with radiating beams.
Moondancer is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a white body, a mane and tail of red with a purple streak, purple eyes, and a symbol of a silver moon surrounded by eight red stars.
Glory is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a white body, a mane and tail of purple with a blue streak, blue eyes, and a symbol of a purple glittery shooting star.
Twilight is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983. She features a pink body, a mane of white with a purple stripe, purple eyes, and a symbol of five dark pink stars.
A mail order exclusive baby pony made its debut this year: Baby Ember! A mail-order exclusive pony was a special My Little Pony figure that could only be obtained through a mail-in promotion rather than being sold in stores. Each My Little Pony toy came with a set number of “pony points” printed on the packaging. Fans would cut out these points and collect them to redeem exclusive mail-order ponies. After processing, the exclusive pony would arrive by mail, often in unique packaging that differed from standard retail ponies.
Lavender Ember is a soft, dreamy variation with a pale purple body that captures a sense of magic and mystery. Lavender Ember holds a special place in the hearts of fans.
Blue Ember boasts a cool, serene blue body, exuding calm and tranquility. This version highlights the versatility of the Ember design, with her unique hue evoking images of clear skies and peaceful days.
The pink version of Ember features a soft, pastel pink body that embodies a sense of warmth and sweetness. Her simple, symbol-free design emphasizes her youthful innocence.
During My Little Pony Year 2 series, Hasbro also released three North American Exclusive sea ponies and three European Exclusive ones. A brand-new addition in Year Two, these Sea Ponies were water-dwelling ponies with a seahorse-like appearance. They came with shell-shaped floats and were a major hit, often associated with playful aquatic adventures.
Wavebreaker is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the exclusive Sea Ponies set released in select European countries, including the UK.
Surf Dancer is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1984 as part of the European-exclusive Sea Ponies set. She features a blue body with vibrant yellow hair and purple-tipped fins.
Seaspray is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1984 as part of the Sea Ponies line. She features a yellow body with pink hair and matching pink fin tips.
Sealight is a Generation 1 My Little Pony introduced in 1983 as part of the inaugural Sea Ponies set in the United States, alongside Seawinkle and Wavedancer.
