The Twice as Fancy Ponies are a special subset of My Little Pony from the 1980s G1 lineup. Their symbols extend across their entire bodies.
The Vintage “Twice as Fancy” My Little Ponies’ symbols are not limited to just the pony’s flank, like most traditional ponies. Instead, their symbols extend across much of their bodies, often covering one side entirely or wrapping around in intricate patterns. This design gave them a bold and eye-catching look that set them apart from other ponies in the lineup.
Their designs tend to be whimsical or thematic, and include elements like candies (Sweet Tooth), butterflies (Dancing Butterflies), or celestial motifs (Milky Way). Many Twice as Fancy Ponies also have colorful combinations of body tones, hair stripes, and detailed symbols, making them visually striking.
Twice as Fancy Ponies were introduced in Year 5 (1986-1987) and became an instant favorite among fans and collectors. Their bold and unique designs stood out in the My Little Pony lineup, making them highly desirable, especially for collectors who appreciate more “intricate details“. These TAF ponies included Earth ponies, unicorns, and pegasi and, in addition to their U.S. release, some Twice as Fancy Ponies were sold in international markets under different names. If you want to see a full list including all foreign releases (or “nirvanas”), you can find them all in my book: The Unofficial My Little Pony Companion.
My Little Pony Year 5
Hasbro added the Twice as Fancy Ponies, where symbols covered much of their bodies, as part of their My Little Pony Year 5 collection. Other groups also introduced this year included the Newborn Twins and the Big Brother Ponies, both of which did really well. However, it’s the TAF ponies that still get most of the attention when talking about later releases, and it all began here, in 1986! These were the first nine ponies Hasbro did with symbols all over the flanks and bodies (note that some ponies, like Pillow Talk and Melody, also had tiny symbols on their cheek).
My Little Pony Year 6
As part of Year 6, Hasbro added more Twice as Fancy Ponies. These are:
