Year Five (1986-1987) of the My Little Pony G1 was one of the busiest and most diverse years in the G1 toy line. Compared to the first four years, these releases added even more magical elements and began layering royalty and adventure themes into the brand, while also introducing new types of ponies that remain highly collectible.
Key Year Five introductions included Princess Ponies with glittery symbols, molded-on crowns, and feathered wands; Twice-as-Fancy Ponies, known for their larger, more elaborate body symbols that wrapped around both sides; and the now widely popular Big Brother Ponies, which had larger, “Clydesdale”-style bodies with furry hooves.
Many My Little Pony collectors consider Year Five, with its wide variety of pony types and the production of entirely new concepts like Newborn Twins and Pony Friends, a turning point where the line reached peak popularity and creativity. Later years would start layering on even more complex gimmicks, but Year Five set the stage for the grand fantasy kingdom feel; something that would, in fact, continue not just through the 80s and 90s but also the pony generations that followed.
